Chapter Twelve
The custody arranged for Angela Coleridge and Christopher Callahan was not as bad as it could have been. Certainly, if the Party had been involved, they would be long since entertained in dank and dark surroundings and would have been interrogated by Security with the possibility of extreme prejudice if they did not cooperate. Names would be extracted and wholesale round-ups of persons would have followed as night follows day.
Instead, the army detail that had taken them from the hotel was courtesy itself and they had been conveyed in the back of a vehicle and deposited in a house on the outskirts of the City, akin to the safe house being used by Jerome and Sarah, although this one was in a secure compound and there were military police on attendance.
Angela had considerable time to think through the events of the last two days and she had also had the chance to spend time with Christopher and understand and know him better than she ever would have done under other circumstances. His main concern was to send a message to his wife Brenda, but the amazing thing was that one of the officers said that he would indeed pass on a message to the effect that Christopher was well and that there was no need to worry. The Party would never do such a thing and his wife would very well also be arrested in other circumstances.
The main point of intense angst for them both related to why the General had detained them so unexpectedly. As far as Angela was concerned, the key factor which returned time and time again to her mind and which gave her confidence in the General was that her old school friend was his mistress, and Catherine had good taste and would not go with a tyrant, she was sure of that.
“I tell you, Angela, we have been put into cold storage for a short while only, and then we will be brought out fresh and to play a part.”
“What part will that be?” asked Angela, for the tenth time at least that day.
They were sitting in a private lounge area in the house and, as far as they could tell, were not being overheard although on this they could not be sure. In one sense it wouldn’t make much difference because they were already fully committed, although Angela did wonder whether the set-up would mean they would speak more openly.
The lack of news was frustrating for them, but Christopher decided to ask one of the army guards if they could listen to a radio, and to his surprise this was agreed, and a small portable box was brought to them.
They sat around the device as Christopher tuned to a station, whereupon they heard the usual patriotic music, which consisted of military marching, songs about the Struggle and speech of how industrial production had reached record levels, which they both knew was a blatant lie. Propaganda was clearly not yet dead.
At the top of the hour, a news bulletin was broadcast.
